Last week was Pioneer Day in Utah - we usually get together with my family and have a BBQ and play some card games. This year, my sister and I decided that we should do something different to commemorate the day...to help the kids understand why we are getting together and why we should celebrate. We still had the BBQ at my sisters house - and then the real fun began. We walked to the park (about 2 1/2 blocks) and each family that came to the BBQ had some sort of pioneer game to play. The idea was met with much hesitation from my children. I guess they didn't like the idea of having to leave their video game and actually "WALK" (a whole 2 1/2 blocks) to the park. My game was first - I brought fabric strips for the 3 legged race.
They didn't last too long after they figured out the middle two people would pretty much have to hop the whole time!
The next game was the stick pull. I learned while playing this game that I have absolutely no upper body strength anymore!
Brad thought he was pretty cool when he beat me - I let him think he was cool, but truth be told, he beat a 37 year old with no upper body strength...how cool is that really?
Brad's ego seemed to disappear when he was faced with his new opponent...his dad! Brad didn't win this one!
The next game was Indian leg wrestling.
Lexi and her dad just wrestled...
Deanne brought some yarn and some buttons so the kids could make some fun button pull toys.
The evening ended by walking (another 2 1/2 blocks) back to Renae's house to play some card games and of course, the kids went right back to their video game...but for a little while, it was fun to be a pioneer!

That sounds like lots of fun. Oh how the times have changed. Our kids are to spoiled.
What a fun way to spend the 24th with your family. I'll bet even though they complained a bit, they will remember that day for a long time. I love keeping up with your family.
Jodi, I am glad you guys are still alive! It seems like a really long time since I have seen you all and we miss you! Drew said the other day, "yet's go see Comen"
Great idea for the Park/Pioneer thing. You look like you all had a great time! Hope to see ya soon! Lisa
It's on for next year! The best part about it was how well the kids responded once we got there and began the festivities. Thanks for organizing it!
What a great way to celebrate and remember that it's easy to have fun without all our extra stuff.
