How I got my kids to eat spinach

I am a picky eater - always have been. I have horrible memories of being forced to eat the cooked spinach in elementary school and I'm pretty sure that is when my dislike of spinach started. (I also have horrible memories of eating the peanut butter bars after being at the dentist and not being able to tell that they were oozing from my cheeks because I was still numb...but thats a different post!) Over the years, I have learned to love fresh spinach in a good salad and I have tried to get my kids to enjoy it too. I recently added fresh spinach to my breakfast smoothie and other than a little "discoloration", you can't tell at all! So if you are like me and you are trying to get your kids to eat more healthy foods...try this recipe sometime! I bet they drink it all up and love it!!
In a blender, combine:
1 cup crushed ice
5-6 whole frozen strawberries
1 banana
1/2 cup pineapple tidbits
1/2 cup plain or vanilla yogurt
1 cup fresh spinach (I use the baby spinach)
some orange juice (about 1/2 cup)
Blend until everything is good and smooth - then enjoy!
I drink this a couple of times a week for my breakfast and my kids LOVE this as a family night treat! It's a healthier alternative to ice cream or milkshakes and tastes really good!

My kids said, "Sick" the first time they saw me put the spinach in...until they tasted it! It's ingenious. Cute new background, by the way.

I'm dealing with the same issues so I'm going to try your recipe. I fell in love with the Vita-mixer 5200 at a Costco demo. They made ice cream with brussell sprouts and smoothies with cabbage and my kids LOVED it! Unfortunatly the machine is $400 so I have to save!

I love a good smoothie, but I haven't tried spinach in it yet. Doesn't sound too appetizing to me, and I love spinach.....just not in a smoothie! I am one that would really need someone else to make this for me and not tell me what was in it till after I tasted it!

I am like Popeye, I love a good can of mushy spinach, but it would probably take a lot to get me to drink it in a smoothie. My horrible memories as a child are watching my mom juice carrots and celery and drink it...brown gross juice...no thank you! :)

I am glad that you commented so that I could find your blog. I love to make smoothies in the morning. I usually add frozen mango chunks & blueberries, along with I banana that was going brown that I had previously frozen. I tried adding frozen sweet potato chunks and my kids never noticed. I will have to try the spinach. Thanks!

Great idea Jodi! My kids are used to finding vegetables in all sorts of things. I 'll have to add smoothies to the list. Some of my kids I can tell what they are eating, others...no way!
